Art Nouveau Faience Scarab Necklace
There have been two main Egyptian Revival periods in the Western world, sparked by the discovery of hidden tombs within ancient pyramids. One of the discoveries in the ancient tombs was of an ancient ceramic, called faience. While there is jewelry made in the 1920s using the ancient faience (around 150 pieces in the world), there was also new faience made using a similar medium common in jewelry of the time. The scarab in this necklace is not an original, but is from the now sought after 1920s Egyptian Revival period. Scarabs were sacred to the Ancient Egyptians, and were used in everything from jewelry to clothing to pottery.
