This Sassanian carnelian, set in an 18th century ring, dates back to 600-900 A.D. The stag intaglio on the underside of the stone was a personal seal for someone's family or job. A ring like this would have been worn on the outer fingers of the left hand for ease of stamping; simply rotate your wrist outwards and press down into a wax seal.
